Learning Through Covid

The COVID-19 pandemic brought a set of challenges that deeply impacted the way Benji and Giulietta learned and experienced the world around them. Much of their programming had always been rooted in the community, from trips to the mall and social outings to volunteer opportunities and hands-on learning in real-life settings. When everything suddenly shut down, those opportunities disappeared, and it became clear that a new approach was needed to keep them engaged and moving forward.

With their usual routines no longer possible, creativity became essential. Instead of focusing on what was lost, the focus shifted to what could be built at home. The garage quickly transformed into a dedicated learning space, evolving into a flexible and supportive classroom for both Benji and Giulietta. Tables and chairs created areas for focused work, while shelves and bins were filled with materials that supported their learning goals. The space was thoughtfully organized into different zones, allowing for activities like letter identification, social skills practice, turn-taking games, and hands-on tasks.

Even without access to the community, this environment provided structure and familiarity. It allowed them to continue developing skills in a way that felt engaging and purposeful. The routine may have looked different, but the intention behind it remained the same, supporting growth, independence, and confidence.

This time reinforced just how important flexibility and creativity can be. While it wasn’t easy to adjust, it showed that learning doesn’t depend on a specific place. Whether out in the community or at home, meaningful progress can still happen when the right support and environment are in place. Through it all, Benji and Giulietta continued to stay engaged, proving that motivation and growth can thrive even in the most unexpected circumstances.
