Each Tuesday, Benji approaches his volunteer tasks with focus . Using his checklist, he gathers items like spray bottles and cloths and completes each step in order. The checklist provides a clear, visual guide that helps him stay organized and confident as he works. This structure allows him to complete his tasks independently and feel a sense of accomplishment in what he does.
Volunteering also gives Benji chances to interact with others. He follows a schedule that begins with going to the volunteer lounge to sign in, where he is expected to lead the way. Using his communication binder, he can greet staff and fellow volunteers with simple words like “hello,” creating small but meaningful connections. Once he completes all his responsibilities in the cafeteria, he gets to visit his mom’s office to say hello to everyone there, again using his binder to communicate. These routines help Benji practice social skills, build confidence, and participate fully in his community in a structured and supportive way.
Benji has been involved in volunteering at multiple organizations and continues to be an active member of his community. His participation shows that volunteering is not just about completing tasks but also about developing independence, learning new skills, and building relationships.
By combining hands-on work with structured supports like checklists, schedules, and his communication binder, Benji is able to contribute meaningfully while gaining confidence and experience. His involvement demonstrates what can be achieved when the right supports and opportunities are in place.
