We support Benji and Giulietta in developing independence, predictability, and smooth transitions through structured schedules and routines, while also prioritizing their autonomy. We have weekly schedules and goals that guide our program, but these are not set in stone. Our approach allows Benji and Giulietta to feel in control of their day, make choices, and have input into how activities unfold. As educators, we use these goals as a framework, but we are flexible and adapt when needed.
Using Visual Supports
We provide multiple visual tools to support Benji and Giulietta’s understanding, independence, and engagement in daily routines. For Benji, we have created a variety of checklists that use checkmarks or symbols to show when a task is completed, providing clear visual feedback and a sense of accomplishment.
Creating Consistent Daily Routines
We establish predictable routines for key parts of the day to help Benji and Giulietta develop independence, and a sense of structure, while still allowing opportunities for choice. Their weekly schedule is fairly consistent, with some time specifically allotted for free choice. They are aware of the days they work at Ikea and Loblaws, attend Baycrest, visit the library, and know when it is time to get ready in the morning, eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and prepare meals. For Benji, we use a variety of pictures and visual supports to represent each activity. At the start of each day, he selects the correct binder for that day. This system helps him anticipate what comes next and follow routines independently.
Incorporating Communication
Schedules and routines provide structured opportunities for Benji and Giulietta to practice functional communication throughout their day. Benji primarily uses his PECS binder to communicate key phrases such as “All done,” “More,” or “I need help,” as well as handing a "Hello" card when he wants to go or to greet someone. Giulietta uses her iPad to communicate more extensively, and we encourage her to comment on activities, express choices, share how she is feeling, or indicate if she is all done with a task or needs a break.
Celebrating Success and Progress
We acknowledge and celebrate when Benji and Giulietta follow schedules or complete tasks, emphasizing their independence and initiative. We highlight progress when they complete routines with minimal or no prompts. By combining chore boards, picture cards, checklists, iPad schedules, and consistent routines, we provide clear structure and support while allowing flexibility and choice. This approach helps Benji and Giulietta navigate daily life confidently.
