Creating structure, smooth transitions, and predictability.

In our work with Benji and Giulietta, we focus on building independence, predictability, and smooth transitions through structured routines and clear daily schedules. At the same time, their autonomy remains at the centre of everything we do. While we do use weekly schedules and set goals to guide our programming, these are not rigid or fixed. Instead, they serve as a flexible framework that helps create consistency while still allowing space for choice, adaptability, and responsiveness to how each day unfolds.

A key priority is ensuring that Benji and Giulietta feel a genuine sense of control over their day. Wherever possible, they are given opportunities to make decisions about activities, choose the order of tasks, and have input into how their routine is shaped.

This approach helps them feel more engaged and confident, while also supporting their ability to transition between activities with greater ease. As educators, we use goals as a guide, but we remain responsive to their needs, energy levels, and preferences in the moment.

Using Visual Supports

Visual supports play an important role in helping Benji and Giulietta understand, navigate, and participate in their daily routines. These tools provide structure in a way that is clear, consistent, and easy to follow, while also encouraging independence and active engagement.

For Benji in particular, we have developed a range of visual checklists that use checkmarks and symbols to indicate when tasks are completed. This simple but effective system gives him immediate visual feedback, helping him see his progress throughout the day. It also supports a sense of accomplishment, as each completed step is clearly marked and recognized.

By combining structured routines with flexible implementation and strong visual supports, we are able to create an environment that promotes both independence and security. This balance allows Benji and Giulietta to feel supported while still developing the confidence and skills they need to navigate their day more independently.

Creating Consistent Daily Routines

We focus on creating predictable and consistent daily routines for Benji and Giulietta to help them build independence, develop structure, and feel secure in their day-to-day experiences. While routines provide a clear framework, there is still intentional space built in for choice and flexibility, ensuring they remain active participants in shaping their day.

Their weekly schedule follows a familiar pattern that stays fairly consistent from week to week. This helps them know what to expect and prepares them for different parts of their routine. They are aware of the days they work at IKEA and Loblaws, attend Baycrest, and visit the library. They also understand the flow of their day, including when it is time to get ready in the morning, eat meals such as breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and participate in meal preparation activities. This predictability supports smoother transitions and helps reduce uncertainty.

For Benji, visual supports play a key role in helping him understand and follow his schedule. A range of pictures and visual cues are used to represent each activity throughout his day. At the beginning of each morning, he independently selects the correct binder for that specific day, which outlines his schedule and activities. This simple routine gives him a clear starting point and helps him understand what is coming next.

Over time, this system has helped Benji develop stronger independence in following routines and anticipating transitions. By combining structure with visual supports and opportunities for choice, we are able to create a daily rhythm that feels both predictable and empowering.

Incorporating Communication

Schedules and routines provide important, structured opportunities for Benji and Giulietta to build and practice functional communication throughout their day. Because their routines are predictable, they naturally create repeated moments where communication can be supported, encouraged, and reinforced in meaningful ways.

For Benji, communication is primarily supported through his PECS binder. He uses it to express key needs and intentions, such as “All done,” “More,” or “I need help.” He also uses a “Hello” card to greet others, which helps him initiate social interactions in a clear and consistent way. These tools allow him to communicate effectively within his daily routines and increase his independence when interacting with others.

Giulietta uses her iPad as her main communication system, which gives her a broader range of expression. She is encouraged to use it not only to make choices and express her needs, but also to comment on activities, share how she is feeling, and indicate when she is finished with a task or needs a break. This supports her ability to participate more fully in her environment and engage in more complex communication exchanges.

By embedding communication opportunities into everyday routines, both Benji and Giulietta are able to practice their skills consistently and in context. This helps them build confidence in expressing themselves while also strengthening their ability to navigate daily activities with greater independence.

Celebrating Success and Progress

We acknowledge and celebrate when Benji and Giulietta follow schedules or complete tasks, emphasizing their independence and initiative. We highlight progress when they complete routines with minimal or no prompts. By combining chore boards, picture cards, checklists, iPad schedules, and consistent routines, we provide clear structure and support while allowing flexibility and choice. This approach helps Benji and Giulietta navigate daily life confidently.

Benji and Giulietta are also continuing to develop confidence as communicators using PECS and their iPads. Modeling is still used to support their communication and understanding. Strong, trusting relationships and a deep understanding of their individual cues help us interpret their needs, wants, and preferences, allowing us to respond effectively and support their ongoing growth.
