Employment, Purpose, and Independence

For Benji and Giulietta, employment has never been about simply filling time or having somewhere to go during the day. Work has become an important part of who they are.

Like everyone else, Benji and Giulietta want to be involved in their communities, contribute in meaningful ways, and have responsibilities that matter. Employment provides opportunities to do all of those things while continuing to build confidence, skills, and independence.

For many individuals with developmental disabilities, employment opportunities can be difficult to find. Too often, expectations are low, opportunities are limited, or people are directed toward segregated programs rather than real workplaces. Our goal was to help them become active participants in their communities and to create opportunities where they could contribute alongside others.

Today, Benji works at IKEA and Giulietta works at Loblaws. While their jobs look different from traditional employment, both have become important parts of their weekly routines. Benji and Giulietta are supported by staff who work alongside them throughout their shifts, helping with communication, problem-solving, and navigating workplace expectations when needed. Tasks are individualized and adapted to match their strengths and support needs, allowing them to participate successfully and build confidence over time. There is flexibility to work at their own pace, take the time needed to learn new responsibilities, and receive support when challenges arise. The focus has never been on fitting into a standard employment model. It has been about creating meaningful opportunities where Benji and Giulietta can contribute, develop skills, build relationships, and experience the same sense of purpose that meaningful work provides for so many people.

For Benji, IKEA has become much more than a workplace. It is a place where he has developed responsibility and confidence over time. He has learned workplace routines, built relationships with staff, and become part of an environment where he is valued. Having a place where people recognize him, expect him to be there, and appreciate his contributions has helped create a genuine sense of belonging.

For Giulietta, working at Loblaws combines something she genuinely enjoys with opportunities to build new skills. She has always had a strong interest in food, grocery shopping, and helping choose ingredients for meals at home, so being in a grocery store environment feels meaningful and motivating to her. Through her role, she helps fulfill online grocery orders, learning how to locate items and follow lists. Along the way, she continues to build communication, workplace, and social skills while becoming more familiar and confident in her role.
