Because Giulietta is non-verbal, traditional resumes and interviews don’t highlight her strengths or the way she communicates. A visual resume allowed us to show her abilities in a clear and accessible way.

When it comes to hiring, traditional resumes and interviews often focus on verbal communication and standard qualifications. But some people communicate differently or non-verbally and have so much to offer. Giulietta’s story shows how creativity and a fresh perspective can open doors and change how people see potential.

Capturing Real Strengths

We began by observing Giulietta in her element, doing things she enjoys and already excels at. She finds items in a grocery store, places them carefully in her cart, matches words to products, and uses her iPad to communicate. Filming and photographing these moments allowed us to capture her independence, her skills, and her comfort in the grocery environment. These were real-life examples of her abilities, not just a list of tasks she might be able to do.

A Visual Resume That Speaks Volumes

From there, we created a visual resume. Instead of a traditional document, we combined these real-life moments with short statements about her skills and her excitement about working at Loblaws. Employers could see her strengths immediately and understand why this job mattered to her. It showed her personality, her competence, and her genuine enthusiasm.

Highlighting What She Loves

One of the most important parts of the resume was showing what Giulietta loves. She has been visiting grocery stores for years, and the joy she shows when she is there is unmistakable. By showcasing this passion, we emphasized that she wasn’t just looking for a job. She was looking for something meaningful to her, something that allowed her to use her strengths every day.

The Power of Creativity in Showcasing Talent

Giulietta’s story reminds us that being non-verbal does not mean someone is not capable. Communication comes in many forms, and it is our responsibility to find creative ways to show what someone can achieve. Videos, visual resumes, and real-life demonstrations of skills allow people to see abilities that might otherwise be overlooked.

The Impact

Sharing the visual resume with Loblaws made a real difference. It removed the pressure of a traditional interview and let Giulietta’s abilities shine right away. In September 2023, she joined the PC Express team. She now uses a scanner, finds items with support, and takes pride in her work. By showing her talents in context, employers could see not just what she could do, but how she thrives when given the opportunity.

Giulietta’s journey reminds us that capability is not always obvious on paper. It is our job to create ways for people to demonstrate their skills, enthusiasm, and potential. When we take the time to see beyond words, we open doors to growth, inclusion, and meaningful contributions.
