Making Communication Meaningful We incorporate core words into daily routines so that communication becomes a natural and meaningful part of everything we do. Whether we are cooking, shopping, reading, or spending time with friends, we look for opportunities to model language in real situations. With Giulietta’s iPad, Benji’s PECS binder, and their laminated photo cards, they have several ways to express themselves. Through modelling, repetition, and hands-on experiences, they learn how to use words in purposeful ways that help them connect with others.

We focus on functional vocabulary that can be used in many different contexts. Core words such as want, go, find, help, all done, and more are woven into everyday activities so Benji and Giulietta can see how language helps them make choices and communicate their needs. As they learn, they begin combining words to express themselves more clearly and confidently.

Their communication tools, including Proloquo on the iPad, picture exchange systems, and visual supports, are updated regularly to match their developing skills and interests. Our team checks in often to make sure their systems continue to meet their needs.

Our approach includes intentional modelling, guided practice, and gradually stepping back as independence increases. We introduce new vocabulary, give them time to process and respond, and then fade our support once the skill becomes more familiar.

As their vocabulary expands, we focus on helping them understand the meaning behind the words they use. By pairing language with actions, emotions, and meaningful outcomes, they learn that communication helps them navigate their world.

We celebrate every milestone, knowing that each new word or combination reflects growth and independence. Our goal is to support Benji and Giulietta in using their vocabulary in flexible and natural ways across all areas of their lives, helping them express who they are and connect with the people around them.
