Benji’s use of PECS is integrated throughout his day, although he is not yet able to reliably initiate exchanges on his own.

Supporting Benji’s Communication Journey

To support Benji's communication, we provide consistent, predictable opportunities across routines, during meal times, community outings, and structured activities, so he knows when communication is expected and meaningful.

We make it a priority to practice picture cards daily. This includes modeling and practicing finding picture cards. For example, if we present cards for spray, dishwasher, and scrub brush, because Benji loves cleaning, we ask him to find one card at a time, reinforcing picture-to-object connections.

We work closely with him to anticipate his needs and preferences. We model exchange and provide verbal or visual cues while gradually fading prompts when possible. This includes offering choices, helping him locate the correct binder for the activity of the day, and supporting him to select or indicate items with his PECS binder. Even if he cannot independently initiate, we respond to his attempts and follow through with his requests.

By getting to know Benji personally, observing his interests, and understanding his typical behaviors, we are able to anticipate his wants and needs to scaffold his communication effectively. Our goal is to provide him with the tools and support necessary to gradually increase his independence.
