Building Independence

Each day, Benji practices gathering the items he will need for outings, from his backpack to any materials or personal items he uses regularly. With the support of picture cards, he communicates what he needs and asks for help when necessary. This daily routine gives him the opportunity to organize his belongings independently and prepare for the day ahead.

Benji's Essential Items Checklist

  1. Backpack

  2. Coat

  3. Boots/shoes

  4. Meds Kit

  5. Water Bottle

  6. Picture Card Communication Book

  7. Any additional items needed

Item Recognition and Location

Using visual supports, such as picture card checklists or the iPad, is an important strategy because it provides Benji with a clear and consistent way to understand and remember which items need to be gathered before leaving the house. Maintaining consistency in where items are stored helps Benji locate and identify them more easily. This approach also encourages responsibility for his belongings, and builds his confidence.

Gathering Process

During the gathering process, verbal prompts and picture cards will be used to guide Benji in collecting each required item. Benji will use the picture cards to respond, identify items, or request help when needed. Physical guidance will be provided when necessary to ensure he completes each step successfully. Positive reinforcement will be offered for every successful action to strengthen his confidence and motivation to continue finding each item.
