Each day starts with a small but meaningful routine for Benji. Before heading out, he takes time to gather everything he needs, from his backpack to the personal items that help him feel comfortable and prepared. This simple practice has become an important part of building his independence. With the support of picture cards, Benji is able to communicate what he needs and even ask for help when something is missing. It gives him a sense of control over his day and helps him feel ready for whatever comes next.
Benji has his own set of essential items that he checks for each day. These include his backpack, coat, boots or shoes, his meds kit, water bottle, and his picture card communication book, along with anything extra he might need depending on the day. Having this consistent set of items helps create structure and predictability, which makes the routine feel familiar and manageable.
A big part of this process is helping Benji recognize his items and know where to find them. Visual supports like picture card checklists or using the iPad give him a clear and reliable way to understand what he’s looking for. Keeping items in consistent places makes a big difference too. When things are always where he expects them to be, he can find them more easily and with less frustration. Over time, this builds a sense of responsibility for his belongings and strengthens his confidence in doing things on his own.
As Benji gathers his items, he’s supported step by step. Verbal prompts and picture cards help guide him through the process, giving him cues without taking away his independence. He uses his picture cards to respond, identify what he needs, or ask for help when something feels challenging. When necessary, gentle physical guidance helps him complete each step successfully so that he stays on track and doesn’t feel overwhelmed.
Throughout it all, encouragement plays a big role. Every success, no matter how small, is recognized and celebrated. This positive reinforcement helps Benji stay motivated and proud of what he’s accomplishing. What might seem like a simple daily routine is actually a powerful way for him to build confidence, develop independence, and start each day feeling prepared and capable.
